Howick ratepayers march to axe senior officials

2009-07-01 00:00

THE Joint uMngeni Ratepayers’ Forum is scheduled to march to the uMngeni Municipality offices today to deliver a petition on behalf of ratepayers, residents and the area’s business community.

The petition is set to be received by acting chief of staff in the premier’s office Dr Warwick Dorning and its aim is to call for the suspension of the officials named in the municipal forensic report.

Spokesman Ric Busá told The Witness that the three meetings held last week with the aim of garnering support for the petition were a success. They managed to collect over 3 000 signatures by yesterday and Busá said this figure is likely to reach 4 000 today. Marchers will start assembling from noon today at Howick’s Market Square. The march will start at 1.45 pm and residents will march 700 metres to reach the municipal gates at 2 pm. “A sitting of the council will be in session from 2 pm and on the agenda is a request for bonuses to be paid to the top managers of the municipality. Rather ironical given the charges made,” said Busá.
