Howick schools merge

2011-09-30 00:00

A DEDICATION ceremony was held at Thembelihle Primary School in Main Street, Howick, yesterday, to mark the beginning of a new era for this independent school run under the banner of the Methodist Church.

The school recently doubled in size after absorbing the pupils of the Merit Christian School, previously situated in the informal settlement near Howick Falls. The Merit Christian School, run by Joyce Ntuli, was operating in a large corrugated iron shed on the grounds of kwa-Nogqaza Primary School.

Ntuli was told in October last year that she and her pupils had to leave by the end of November.

She then contacted Carolyn Hancock, whom she knows through a pupil whose parent worked at Laurence and Carolyn Hancock’s farm in the Karkloof. Hancock approached the Thembelihle school and asked if the children could be housed there. Their response was positive and Hancock and her grandmother-in-law, Joan, funded the building of three new classrooms.

The arrival of the new pupils has seen the school population rise to around 300 and a pre-primary division has been opened at the school, which now offers education up to grade seven.

“We had been looking to expand Thembelihle,” said the Reverend Adrian Roux, resident minister of the Howick Methodist Church. “And now we can move on to the next level to open as a primary school. The Methodist Church has a long tradition of building schools and hospitals,” he said. “And although the apartheid government tried to break that down this school is a legacy of that tradition.”
