Howick’s Thokoza to be moved

2008-07-30 00:00

About 2 000 residents from Shiyabazali and Thokoza informal settlements in Howick will move to the proposed low-cost housing on Hollywood Farm.

The councillor for both these areas, Maggie Ndlovu, said meetings have been held with the residents and they agreed to move.

“We held a number of meetings with the residents over the years and at first they disagreed with the move. In meetings that followed they began to see that this was the best move for them,” said Ndlovu.

However, residents from the Thokoza settlement told The Witness that they are not moving. James Madlala said the move would make it hard for their children to get an education as they have to travel to school.

“We cannot afford to move to the farm because it will be hard for most of us to travel to work to get odd jobs that sustain us,” said Madlala.

Another resident, Mandla Mtshali, said they told the ward councillor during an imbizo that they are not moving. He said that they will have to be bulldozed from their mud houses. “We have told the councillor that they should build houses for us here,” added Mtshali.

The proposed Khayelisha Housing Project is situated between the N3 highway and Mpophomeni on the R617, with Midmar Dam across the road.
