Hugo makes light work of his victory

The inaugural Bonitas Sunday Tribune Midmar Multi-sport Extreme took place at the beautiful Midmar Dam last weekend and attracted a field of nearly 300 participants as part of the Midmar Multisport Festival, which combined with the Capital K Swim on Sunday.

SA’s top multisporter, Dan Hugo from Stellenbosch, made light work of his victory in the

full distance swim event over a one-kilometre swim, 30-km mountain bike and 10-km trail run format.

However, there was no shortage of talent in the men’s field, which included top triathletes Carl Storm and Glen Gore.

Terence Parkin is starting to make a name for himself in multi-sport. With a strong bike leg to match his superb swim, he is going to be a force to be reckoned with, and his deserved second-place finish at the Midmar Multi-sport is confirmation of that.

Pietermaritzburg’s Jean-Paul van der Linde finished third ahead of team-mate Lance Chapman, with triathlete Andrew Baker in fifth.

Carla Germishuys worked hard for her victory in the women’s racing, with a Su Erskine keeping the pressure on after being in the lead at one point during the bike leg — an impressive performance having become a mother less than four months ago. Yvette Roberts was the third woman home.

The event presented five races: the long swim and long paddle, short swim and short paddle and the multicross (five-kilometre trail run, 30-km mountain bike, five-kilometre trail run).

Trevor Hellens and Landy Puddu were the respective winners of the long paddle, while Vaughn Koopman and Jenna Starr won the short paddle.

The short swim was won by Dillon Holm and Julia Colvin respectively. In the Multicross, Austin Lake and Gail Arnell took the honours.

Despite the overcast weather conditions, the event was well supported and looks set to become one of the highlights of the multisport calendar.

The 14th Capital K open water swim took place in ideal weather conditions at Midmar Dam on Sunday. Despite the cool water temperature, the absence of wind made for fast swimming.

The swimming followed the customary three-point course, starting at Munro Bay and finishing on the main slipway.

The double slipway at the start makes the Capital K unique in that swimmers can spread themselves out before the left turn at the first bouy.

The most difficult section of the swim was the middle third where the swimmers were most exposed and the slight chop on the water and head current gave the leading swimmers a chance to make a move. Rounding the last bouy and the final third became more sheltered and produced exciting sprint finishes where many of the races were decided in the last few metres of the water or in some cases, went down to a sprint up the slipway.

Chad Ho was remarkable in winning not only the three-kilometre Fina swim in a time of 35 min 40 sec, but also making it a double victory to become the fastest man on the day, when he clocked an impressive 10 min 50 sec in the men’s 15 to 30 age-group start at 11 am.
