Hulamin celebrate success in education investment

2008-05-13 00:00

Hulamin recently celebrated their corporate social investment efforts in the area of skills and education, after having initiated a project to establish computer centres in five disadvantaged schools in Imbali, the Grange and Glenwood in Pietermaritzburg.

During the implementation phase, the schools showed their commitment by investing in the necessary supporting infrastructure, including security.

Each school also formed a committee to manage the computer centres, known as tuXlabs.

Inkululeko Technologies, an organisation that established the tuXlab programme, are partners in the project.

Alan Fourie, CEO of Hulamin, said: "Creating a culture of life learning and improving one’s skills starts at a school level. I trust that the computers and software we have provided Inkululeko in this programme will assist the schools in contributing to this national imperative."

Hilton Theunissen, CEO of Inkululeko Technologies, added: "The computer labs operate with free software called Edubuntu, and include the popular community encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Hulamin … chose Inkululeko’s tuXlab programme due to its success in schools located elsewhere in the country.

"TuXlabs are models for sustainable ICT implementation in schools and currently operate in about 200 schools throughout SA."
