Hunt for impatient woman who drove bakkie through pride of lions

NELSPRUIT — The management of the Kruger National Park are on the hunt for a motorist whose bakkie was scratched by a lion after she reportedly tried to bump her way through a pride of lions in the middle of the road.

The park’s spokesperson William Mabasa said, “A pride of lions were lying in the road and the woman allegedly tried to get them to move out of the way. One lion became irritated, stood up and scratched her car with his claws,” Mabasa said.

The woman raced off before the tourists who witnessed the incident could write down her registration number.

“We do not know who the person is but are desperate to find her. These type of people should not come to the park. It is extremely reckless and unacceptable behaviour,” Mabasa said, adding, “We ask for anyone with photos or even the registration number of the bakkie to come forward with the information.”

In another incident in the game park, Jean Graham, owner of Discover Kruger Safari, said on the same morning a lioness had bitten through a Toyota Fortuner’s tyre.

“I came on the scene where park personnel were busy changing a tyre on a Toyota Fortuner on the S25 [road] near the Crocodile Bridge. When I asked the driver what happened, he said a lioness had bitten the tyre,” Graham said.

He warned tourists to give the animals space instead of trying to get as close as possible to the animals.

Mabasa could not confirm the second incident.
