2011-10-17 00:00

A LEADING English-speaking expert on Archbishop Oscar Romero and former chief executive of the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development in the UK, Julian Filochowski, will be delivering this year’s Hurley Lecture.

Filochowski’s lecture is titled “Oscar Romero, Bishop and Martyr: Guiding Light for the 21st Century”.It will be delivered in Durban’s Emmanuel

Cathedral Hall on Thursday at 6 pm.

“Like Denis Hurley, [he was] a credible witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ for these sceptical times,” said Filochowski.

Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador in the tiny central American country of El Salvador, was assassinated while celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980. He is regarded as one of the greatest champions of justice of the Catholic Church in recent times.

The Hurley Lecture will be followed by a candlelight procession to Archbishop Denis Hurley’s tomb, led by Cardinal Wilfrid Napier.

To attend the dinner, call the justice & peace office at 031 303 1417. — Arts Editor.
