‘I did not call home — I am alone,’ says Jika Joe man

ORPHANED as a child orphan, Jack John (23) found his way down to South Africa almost 12 years ago. He was 11 years old and South Africa is almost all he knows.

John, from Balaka in Malawi, said he has been living in South Africa ever since and has been at the Jika Joe informal settlement for the past seven years, where life was relatively calm.

Talking about his narrow escape on Wednesday night, John said, “I did not have to call home and let them know I am alright because I have no one there. My family died before I came down here — it’s just me, I am alone,” he told Weekend Witness yesterday.

His world fell apart on Wednesday night when the locals went on the rampage assaulting foreigners on suspicion they had murdered a local man. What little he owned was stolen or destroyed.

He said although he has enjoyed — and had lived well — in Jika Joe, considering what has happened, he wants to move to a different area.

“South Africa is a great place. It’s just this place that does not seem right any more.”

Like many others, John is not sure where his next meal is coming from for the foreseeable future. He is without food, clothes or money.
