‘I may never see the kid’

THE father of a man whose body was found floating in the Msunduzi River opposite Alexandra Swimming Pool on Wednesday night expressed sadness at the possibility of never being able to meet his grandchild.

His son died before he could introduce him to the mother of the child.

The father, Dumisa Mbanjwa, said: “My son recently told me that he has a child, but I have never met my grandchild and I do not know where the mother lives.

“I last saw my son on Friday when he left home for job hunting and when he did not return we thought that he had found himself a new job.”

Ntuthuko Mncedisi Mbanjwa (27) was stabbed several times in the back. His killers made sure that he was dead by running him over with a car before dumping his body in the Msunduzi River, according to his father.

“My son was an intelligent and responsible young man who wanted to lead a good life and ensured that he held on to whatever meagre job that he had just so that he could provide for himself until he found something better,” said Mbanjwa.

“We are now relieved that his body has been found because we were worried that maybe we might never find it.”

Mbanjwa suspects that the attackers robbed his son before killing him because his wallet and two cellphones that he carried with him were missing when his body was found.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said police had been alerted by a passerby who saw the body floating in the river.

She said members of the Pietermaritzburg search and rescue unit retrieved the body, and an ID book was found on the man.
