‘I raped and killed little girl’

2013-06-26 00:00

A 25-YEAR-OLD man will face sentencing today after pleading guilty in the high court to having raped and murdered a seven-year-old girl in the Margate area on June 15.

The accused, Brian Jula, also pleaded guilty to having raped an adult woman a month earlier on May 11 this year.

Describing the rape and murder of the child, Thabisile Nhlumayo, in a written statement before court, Jula said he was on his way home from a tavern when he saw the little girl playing at the roadside with two friends. After giving the children some “vetkoek” he asked the girl to accompany him to a nearby forest.

In the forest he ordered her to undress and she started to cry. “I grabbed her on her throat with my left hand to prevent her calling out for help. I undressed the deceased with my right hand and I forced her to lie on her back on the ground, while still holding her throat with my left hand,” he said.

Jula said he raped the child. When he finished he discovered she was no longer moving and concluded she was dead. He then fled the scene.

He said although he didn’t intend to kill the child, he foresaw she could suffocate and die as a result of being throttled by him in his efforts to keep her quiet.

On May 11, he said he had also been at a tavern and was returning home when he met an adult woman. It was raining and he accompanied her home.

After watching her removing her rain-soaked clothing at her home he became aroused, entered her room and raped her.

He fled when he heard the woman’s husband arriving home.
