‘I was raped by 14 men’

2011-10-07 00:00

“ALL that was left for them to do, was to kill me,” said a Greytown woman of about the 14 men who ambushed and raped her on Sunday evening.

The woman (24) of Matimatolo near Greytown said she was walking home through a small cleared forest area when she was ambushed by at least 20 men.

She said 14 of them, some of whom she knows, took turns to rape her. Although this was the first time they had raped anyone as far as she knows, she added, the men are notorious for terrorising the community. Some of then are brothers, she added.

She and a younger relative were walking back from a relative’s house where they had attended a wedding.

At about 7.30 pm they encountered a group of three men, one of them “proposing love” to the relative she was with.

She said another group of more than 20 men appeared in front of them and just grabbed her and dragged her away.

The men dragged her for almost a kilometre before they found a spot where they raped her.

The men who had been proposing love to her relative tried to intervene, but they were overwhelmed by the group and beaten.

Her relative rushed to their neighbour’s home to find help.

She said the ordeal lasted for quite a while. “I could not scream because they had closed my mouth and when I managed to scream they would make a loud noise together to drown out my screams.”

She said she doesn’t know why it took so long for someone to come to her aid. “The area where we were walking is not deserted; there are houses, so I think the people heard me scream but they were afraid to come out.”

She said she was rescued when a neighbour arrived and shone car lights on the gang. “They were just about done raping me and all that was left was for them to kill me.”

The woman said she has had counselling and is recovering, but is still fearful as her rapists have not yet been arrested.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the police are on the trail of the suspects.
