‘I would have been there …’

ZIYAAD Ally earned the wrath of his four friends when he decided not to join them on a “drive around town” late on Wednesday night.

Opting to go to bed just before midnight as he had an early start at work the next day, nothing could prepare him for the tragedy that followed.

“When the police came knocking on my door at 2 am to tell me that my friends were in an accident and had died, I thought it was a nasty joke. I just couldn’t believe it. They were the only friends I had. I still cannot believe all four of them are dead and I would have been there,” said Ally.

Recalling the last moments he spent with his friends, Ally (26) said he was together with Mikyle Robert (his neighbour), Dino Pillay and Shikar Singh at Mikyle’s Delhi Road home, when Yesigan Govender arrived at about 9 pm. The group then went in Govender’s Golf 5 to Hesketh Drive, Hayfields, where Singh was fetching his girlfriend, Shivania Naidoo’s Audi convertible. He was apparently using the vehicle the next day to travel to Durban for a job interview.

The group had supper with Naidoo and her mom and then left — Govender and Pillay in the Golf, and the rest in the Audi. They drove back to Raisethorpe, stopped at a service station and then at Govender’s Exeter Road, Allandale, home to drop off his car.

Govender and Pillay then joined the group in the Audi and they all went to drop Ally off at his home, where they spent 30 minutes trying to convince him to join them. “They were upset with me when they left. I didn’t know that was the last time I would speak to them.”
