ICD: Mandate, name changed

2012-04-03 00:00

SINCE Sunday the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) is no longer known by that name.

On April 1 the unit became known as the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

The directorate said in a statement: “This change is brought about by the Independent Police Investigative

Directorate Act, No.1 of 2011, which was signed into law by President Jacob Zuma on May 12, 2011.”

The Ipid would no longer deal with service delivery and matters relating to the failure by police to comply with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act, No. 116 of 1998.

The directorate would deal with deaths in police custody as a result of police actions, rape by police officers, complaints of torture or assault by police, and corruption matters within the police, it added.

It would be granted an additional R36 million to implement the act.
