ICT Fair to promote technology as a development tool

2011-07-11 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG will soon host its first information and communication technology expo — the PMB ICT Fair.

This event was initially scheduled to take place on May 10 to 14, but the timing was deemed to be too close to the municipal elections.

The PMB ICT Fair was then rescheduled for July 27 to July 29 at the Royal Showgrounds.

This is the first event of its kind in Africa that will provide a venue for debate on the critical role of ICT as a tool for facilitating development, under the theme “Harnessing Technology to Improve People’s Lives”.

The project was launched at the beginning of April by the then Msunduzi mayor, Mike Tarr.

Present at the launch was the chairperson of the national portfolio committee on communications, Eric Kholoane, who commended the city for the initiative.

The fair will consist of three main activities, a two-day ICT conference looking at how ICT is used in different sectors, a three-day ICT exhibition showcasing different uses of ICT and a “Youth in ICT” day that will focus on career development and training programmes being implemented in different companies.

The organisers will host a dinner on July 28 at the city hall to raise funds for the incubation project.

The sponsors for the 2011 PMB ICT Fair are Cell C, Small Enterprise Development Agency, Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal, Dimension Data, Telkom, Barons VW and Redlands Hotel.
