IEC: Summit on political tolerance

2010-11-11 00:00

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has invited political parties in KwaZulu-Natal to a summit on political tolerance in preparation for the 2011 local government elections.

Spokesperson Thabani Ngwira said the commission and the political parties represented in the KZN Legislature felt it was necessary to hold the summit in view of the challenges in the province.

He said the parties will be briefed on the IEC’s state of readiness for the elections, which are expected to be held early next year. He said the departments of Justice and Safety and Security and the National Prosecuting Authority have also been invited.

The IEC has a standing legal obligation to hold monthly meetings with political parties to discuss concerns relating to the elections, identify potential sources of conflict and devise measures to curtail conflict, Ngwira added. The summit will take place in Durban next week.
