IFP: Arrested councillor agrees to stand down

2013-04-12 00:00

THE Inkatha Freedom Party has asked one of its eThekwini councillors to resign after his arrest for allegedly being involved in criminal activities.

The KwaMashu councillor, whose name has been withheld because the police could not confirm if he had appeared in court for murder, was arrested in connection with a gun-related case last month.

IFP chairperson of the eThekwini caucus, Mduduzi Nkosi, told The Witness yesterday that a man was found dead next to the councillor’s house. Under questioning by the police, it was discovered that he had an unlicensed firearm and he was arrested. After he appeared in court two weeks ago, the police arrested him again in connection with a murder case in Melmoth.

Nkosi said: “The IFP took a decision to request him to resign … following these serious allegations …

“We went to the police station where we explained the situation to him, and he complied with the party’s request.

“His position will be revisited once the court cases are finalised,” said Nkosi. — WR.
