IFP MPLs quit, Liptak absent

2013-05-30 00:00

TWO Inkatha Freedom Party MPLs have resigned their seats in the KZN Legislature and the fate of a third appears to be in the balance.

The Witness has learnt that M.J. Mthethwa and Usha Roopnarain resigned as MPLs, while there are “internal matters” between the party and MPL Roman Liptak.

The trio were absent from Tuesday’s budget debate in the legislature.

It is understood that the three will make a statement soon.

Mthethwa said he had retired as an MPL.

“I will die an Inkatha [member]. I even told Umntwana [IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi].”

Roopnarain said she and her two colleagues had resigned.

Asked for the reasons, she would only say: “It is complicated.”

IFP provincial leader Blessed Gwala said Mthethwa had resigned due to ill health, while Roopnarain had quit after telling the IFP leadership “she has no time for party work”.

“There is a problem between Mr Liptak and the party. It is difficult to talk about it,” Gwala said.

He denied that Liptak was suspended.

Asked why Liptak was absent from Tuesday’s sitting, Gwala said: “We don’t know where he is. He has just disappeared.”

Liptak could not be reached for comment. He did not answer his cellphone and did not return text messages.
