IFP councillor killing: taxi owner in court

2012-11-03 00:00

SECURITY was tight at the Durban Regional Court yesterday when a taxi owner appeared in connection with the kidnapping and murder of an IFP councillor.

A group of IFP supporters sang outside the court premises under the watchful eye of police.

Sanele Zondi (34) made his court appearance after his case was transferred from the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court earlier this week following his arrest on October 26.

Zondi, from Shombela township near Inanda, is charged with the murder and kidnapping of IFP councillor Themba Xulu.

It is alleged that Zondi handcuffed the victim and forced him into a car on October 5. Xulu was found dead near Inanda two days later.

The matter was set down for a bail application on November 7 at the request of prosecutor Blackie Swart.
