IFP exodus: Dube ready to intervene

2011-02-01 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, is ready to intervene decisively in the affairs of three Zululand District Municipality councils affected by councillors’ defections if the need should arise.

Three ZDM municipalities controlled by the Inkatha Freedom Party — Ulundi, Nongoma and eDumbe — were rocked last week by defections of IFP councillors to the New Freedom Party led by former IFP national chairperson Zanele “VZ” Magwaza-Msibi.

Of 62 IFP councillors in the three municipalities, 49 have defected to the NFP

At the weekend the IFP national council announced the councillors’ expulsion from councillorship positions on the grounds that “as members of another political party, they cannot be public representatives of the IFP”.

It is feared that their expulsion will render some of the municipalities dysfunctional as among them are ward councillors who cannot be replaced until the local government elections, which are expected to be held in May.

Dube’s spokesperson, Mthatheni Mabaso, said the MEC is concerned about the developments in the municipalities and her department will intervene if necessary.

He said developments in the municipalities will be be made public.
