IFP fires Buthelezi dissenters

STILL in the middle of celebrating Women’s Month, the Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu-Natal has dismissed two of its women’s brigade members who publicly called on IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi to step down.

The two, Bongekile Gwala and Angel Mthembu, called on Buthelezi to step down during a Women’s Day rally held by the women’s brigade at Dalton Hostel in eThekwini on August 9.

In a statement yesterday, IFP provincial secretary Bonginkosi Buthelezi said Gwala and Mthembu were dismissed after a disciplinary hearing that took place on Monday. They were accused of bringing the party into disrepute during the rally.

Gwala said she was addressing the rally as the chairperson of the IFPWB in the eThekwini district “and what I said represented the people I lead in my district”.

The statement added: “Apart from dragging the IFP’s name through the mud in the media, the two women also gave themselves bogus titles, alleging that they were IFPWB leaders, which was false and in contravention of the IFP’s constitution.

“The inquiry concluded that their transgressions were of such a serious nature that it warranted their dismissal with expulsion from the party with immediate effect.”
