IFP military wing: members deny leaving party

2011-08-24 00:00

SOME high-ranking members of the Inkatha Freedom Party’s former armed wing yesterday reaffirmed their commitment to the party in the face of “rumours” that they had collectively abandoned the ailing party to join the breakaway party, National Freedom Party (NFP).

“Not all of us have run away to join our dear sister Zanele [KaMagwaza-Msibi]; many of us have stayed true to our family, the IFP,” said national chairperson of the KZN Self Protection Unit (SPU), Lucky Ncube.

“We believe that the IFP will be back in 2014 with a stronger showing at the polls, and the IFP will do so with our help …” he added.

Ncube is also a member of the South African Nation Defence Force (SANDF).

IFP national organiser Albert Mcwango said that there was clear discrimination against members of the IFP within the SANDF.

He said while members of the former Mkhonto WeSizwe (the ANC’s military wing) were taken on permanently, their members were only given two-year contracts.

SANDF spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nikko Allie was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
