IFP pays tribute to Ambrosini

2014-08-18 00:00

THE IFP yesterday paid tribute to MP Mario Oriani-Ambrosini, as a “fighter who was brave till his death”.

Oriani-Ambrosini died on Saturday after a long battle with lung cancer.

Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said Oriani-Ambrosini was not just a fighter in this battle, but in the many he engaged over the course of some three-and-a-half decades in politics.

Buthelezi said it was difficult for him to accept the death of Oriani-Ambrosini.

“While we knew it could happen at any stage, given his diagnosis of terminal lung cancer in April last year, we had seen him fight back with courage and, in many respects, tremendous success.”

He said Oriani-Ambrosini had believed in challenging conventional thought, dogma and imposed limitations. “It was what he dedicated his life to doing.”

The pair met in 1991 at a UN Security Council meeting and became friends for the past 23 years.

Buthelezi said the constitutional law attorney had impressed him as a remarkably bright, talented and tenacious young man, deeply knowledgeable on constitutional law and determined to shape history.

He sent his and the IFP’s condolences to Oriani-Ambrosini’s family.
