IFP slams Cosatu support for ANC

2010-11-25 00:00

The IFP has called on its members to review their membership of trade-union federation, Cosatu. This follows pronouncements by the organisation that it will be supporting the ANC in the upcoming local government elections.

The Party’s deputy national chairman, Velaphi Ndlovu said the IFP was extremely disappointed that Cosatu — which has been so vehemently outspoken against the ANC’s policies, programmes, public representatives and perceived involvement with corruption — will still be backing the ruling party in the upcoming elections

“Clearly Cosatu’s leadership is confused. We therefore call on our supporters not to become pawns in this political game between Cosatu and the ANC, but to end their membership of the union federation forthwith,” said Ndlovu.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said the union federation has stated its support for the ANC in the local government elections in many of its rallies and will be making the call once more at its forthcoming 25th anniversary celebration in Johannesburg on Saturday, December 4. He said Cosatu urges its members to ignore the IFP’s call and in turn review their membership of the IFP.
