IFP youth wing chair joins NFP

IFP Youth Brigade Ulundi constituency chairperson Mduduzi Buthelezi has defected to the National Freedom Party (NFP), and was officially welcomed on Tuesday.

NFP Ulundi constituency chairperson Senzo Shwala said the move was a winning card for his party ahead of the 2014 elections.

“We have been talking to Buthelezi for quite some time. We tried all we could to show him how it was important to be part of a party that was looking after the interest of the people. Finally, our endeavours bore fruit,” Shwala said.

Buthelezi was welcomed by party leader Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi during a rally at kwaGodlankomo Sport Grounds in Ulundi, one of the only two IFP-run municipalities.

In a statement yesterday, KaMagwaza-Msibi said no leadership position promises were made to those who have joined the NFP. This, however, was disputed by IFP spokesperson Blessed Gwala, who said Buthelezi was enticed with a job offer.

KaMagwaza-Msibi named a num- ber of other IFP community leaders who defected to the party with Buthelezi. “People are joining us in droves because they see that the NFP is the only hope to change their lives for good as all other old political parties have failed them. As the leader of the NFP, I pledge that we are not going to disappoint them if they vote us into power in 2014,” she said.

Buthelezi said his reason for defecting to the NFP was that the party was the only “moving” vehicle for community development.

“As I join the NFP I am not bitter against the IFP or have any grudge against it. Although I have left the Buthelezi party, I am still going to continue respecting the Buthelezi clan chieftaincy.”

Gwala it was not true that other members of his party defected with Buthelezi. “I was in the areas they mention in their statement and the people they claim to have defected were there. We were not told about any other defections.”

On Buthelezi's move, he said: “We know that he had been offered a job in the waste section of the Zululand Municipality. We also know that he had been used by KaMagwaza-Msibi to sow division within the IFP.”
