IPL: Big names star for Superkings, Challengers

2010-03-17 00:00

IT was a day for the big names in yesterday’s IPL clashes, as Jacques Kallis starred for the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the early game, while MS Dhoni provided the fireworks in the evening play for Chennai Superkings.

Kallis inspired the Challengers to chase down what looked a daunting 204 to win against the Kings XI Punjab, in a knock that went a long way to proving that no target is safe in this year’s competition.

Manvinder Bisla (75) and Ravi Bopara (77) had seemingly set the Punjab side on the path to victory with an opening stand of 129 in 14 overs, but Kallis’s 55-ball knock of 89 (8x4, 5x6) and Robin Uthappa’s blistering 17-ball 50 saw Bangalore cruise home.

In the second game, Dhoni’s 33-ball 66 was the cornerstone for Chennai’s 164 for 3.

His bowlers then bundled the erratic Kolkata Knight Riders out for just 109, with Cobras all-rounder Justin Kemp helping himself to 3/12 in the carnage.

Scores in brief: Chennai Super Kings 164 for 3 (Dhoni 66, Badrinath 43) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 109 (Kemp 3-12) by 55 runs.

Bangalore Royal Challengers 204 for 2 (Kallis 89, Uthappa 51) beat Kings XI Punjab 203 for 3 (Bopara 77, Bisla 73) by eight wickets.
