IPL: Tendulkar stars in Mumbai win

2010-03-23 00:00

THE Mumbai Indians had captain Sachin Tendulkar to thank as they strolled to a seven-wicket triumph over the Kolkata Knight Riders yesterday.

The Knight Riders welcomed back West Indian captain Chris Gayle and he did not disappoint, slamming 75 off 60 balls.

Gayle hit seven fours and two sixes as he showed the Kolkata fans what they had been missing. His return, and the imminent arrival of Brendon McCullum, gives the Knight Riders a distinctly more dangerous look, as both are renowned stars in the shortest version of the game.

Gayle received handy support from Sauruv Ganguly and Owais Shah, who both hit 31, but their total was just not enough against the classy Tendulkar.

The “little master” was particularly severe on national teammate Ishant Sharma, whom he spanked for six fours in two overs.

Three straight drives in Sharma’s second over were preceded by a more brutal assault in the first, as the Indian kingpin blazed away to set the fastest team fifty of this year’s competition so far.

Despite losing three wickets, the Mumbai Indians never really looked troubled while their star turn was at the crease.

Tendulkar batted throughout the innings, as Mumbai won with nine balls to spare.

Mumbai Indians 156 for 3 (Tendulkar 71*) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 155 for 3 (Gayle 75, Zaheer 2-27) by seven wickets.
