Idiotic quest delivers a winner

DIRECTOR Rajkumar Hirani teams up once again with producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra after the Munnabhai series to give us another landmark film, 3 Idiots. The film is based on a novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. All I can say is pants down and thumbs up to director Rajkumar Hirani for his frothy, feel-good and fun-filled 3 Idiots, which left me laughing uncontrollably; to put it in a nutshell, “all izz well”.

Two college friends, Farhan Qureshi (Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), embark on a journey to look for third “idiot”, Rancho (Aamir Khan). As their search continues, the film uses flashbacks to tell the story of their friend Rancho, a free-thinker who, in his unique way, touched and changed their lives.

Of the three, Rancho is the only one who wants to study. Farhaan has a passion to be a wildlife photographer, while Raju is burdened by the fear of not meeting his parents’ expectations. To make college life more interesting and complicated, the idiots had to put up with the quirky and eccentric Professor Viru aka Virus (Boman Irani) and his ravishing daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor), who falls for Rancho but has to face up to her eccentric pa.

Who was Rancho? Where did he come from? Why did he leave? We are bombarded with tumultuous events that generate uncontrollable laughter, melodrama and a twist in the tale.

Aamir Khan is brilliant as Rancho. He delivers the juvenile buoyancy and vivacity of his character with ease — he is undoubtedly Bollywood’s No.1 hero. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi equally give ample support and are superb in their roles. Kareena Kapoor’s performance is restrained, but she does have a few well-acted scenes. Bomani Irani as the eccentric Professor Virus is vile and virulent. Credit must also go to Omi, who is brilliant as Chatur.

After 3 Idiots, director Hirani definitely falls into Bollywood’s top 10 directors category. He balances the rough and fun-filled incidents with a well-scripted storyline, bringing out sterling performances from all his characters.

Do yourself and your family a favour and watch 3 Idiots — this is really an entertaining flick.
