‘Idol’ Cele to host hits on VumaFM

2013-04-30 00:00

IDOLS runner-up Lloyd Cele has added another string to his bow — as a radio presenter on Vuma 103FM.

He is one of a host of new presenters joining the Umhlanga-based isiZulu radio station, which went live in November last year.

Joining him will be businesswoman, model and the first South African Survivor winner, Vanessa Marawa, and two veterans of radio, Lucky Sefatsa and Grant Shakoane.

Cele said working in radio was something he’d always wanted to do. “I’m really excited to be joining the team at Vuma. They’ve given me my own show, my own slot … it’s going to be fun.”

Cele, who is nominated for three South African Music Awards (Samas) — for best pop album, best collaboration for Louder featuring Euphonik and DJ Fresh and record of the year for Hero — plans to bring in guest musicians who will play live in the studio, as well as local people with inspirational stories. He’ll also be sharing his own story with listeners.

Marawa said radio would be a whole new ballgame for her.

“I’m used to TV, so I’m a little apprehensive and nervous,” she added.

Helping her adjust will be Kwasa Breakfast Show co-host Felix Hlope and Leleti Khumalo, who is leaving the breakfast show to join DumiB in the evening show from 7 pm to 10 pm Monday to Wednesday and to host her own show on Thursday evenings, Vuma station manager, Phindi Gule, said.

• Vuma 103FM covers greater Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Greytown, Ballito on the North Coast and Scottburgh on the South Coast. All the new presenters will be on air from May 6.
