‘Idols’: Good start for local singer

2011-07-25 00:00

AT last the Idols judges are talking some sense: “And that’s how the professionals do it,” said judge Gareth Cliff, following Erin Fourie’s first performance last night.

Fourie’s rendition of The Killers’ All These Things That I’ve Done “had us from the first note to the end, and literally lit up the place”, said new judge Unathi Msengana.

Besides great vocal ability and talent, the Hilton songstress’s delivery contained not-so-subliminal lyrics (as The Killers fans will know), “Yeah, you know you got to help me out, oh don’t you put me on the blackburner.”

Subtle, Erin, subtle. Don’t worry, we’ll out-vote the Gautengers.

Other KZN contestants included Sibusisiwe Jali (20) performing Katy Perry’s Firework and Phaksy Mngomezulu doing Broken Strings by James Morrison.

Jali (20) was up on stage first and gave a solid performance, although, as Randall Abrahams noted, it’s a giant leap from Sun City to the live Idols stage and he thought Miss J’s vocals were not up to scratch.

Mngomezu (20) of Empangeni put in a “composed” and controlled performance.

Notable performances from the evening were Dave van Vuuren performing With or Without You (U2) and the eccentric Freddie van Dango, who performed Coldplay’s The Scientist.

The voting lines opened at the start of last night’s show and the five contestants who receive the most votes this week will go through to the Top 10. The judges will select the other five members of the Top 10, and five contestants will go home.

KZN numbers to vote for:

To vote for Erin, text 13 to 37400, or vote on MXit.

To vote for Miss J text 03 to 37400, or vote on MXit.

To vote for Phaksi, text 10 to 37400, or vote on MXit.
