'Idols': Howick High hopefuls wow judges in vibey performance

2009-03-23 00:00

Although judges were pleased by both former Howick High Idols hopefuls' performances last night, the other contestants also held their own, and the competition is building up.

Idols contestants have always been criticised for their choice of songs. Last night, however, they left the judges in awe (most of the time, at least) with their vibey interpretations of songs from the 2000s.

Howick High Idols hopeful Jason Hartman kicked off the show with Seal's Love's Divine, and the judges were unanimous in their praise.

Dave Thompson said it was the perfect start to the show.

Mara Louw, who has always backed the 29-year-old, said, "You're magic, baby!" - and Gareth Cliff agreed, calling his performance "sensational".

Not even Randall Abrahams could find a fault, calling it "a measured performance".

Pixie Bennett (25) also got it right, singing I'm Outta Love by Anastacia.

Thompson marvelled at the "four tiny little girls with such strong voices" in the top eight and Louw laughed. She also said that Bennett was "full of life", but, she said, in her opinion "the guys are kicking butt".

Cliff liked that Bennett wasn't afraid of doing a wide variety of songs. And Abrahams couldn't get over Bennett 's glamorous new style. "What happened to the tie-dyed hippie who first came to audition?" he teased.
