‘Idols’: Local hero Jason Hartman wows judges with performances of ‘Kiss from a rose’ and ‘Hey Jude’

Idols judge Mara Louw loves our local hopeful so much that she even “prays” that he makes it to the finale.

“Mama Idols” said this after Jason Hartman’s phenomenal performance of Seal’s Kiss From A Rose on last night’s show.

With only one week to the final show of M-Net Idols season five, the pressure was on for the three remaining contestants.

Each had to sing three songs: one chosen for them by the show’s producers, one song of their own choice, and one chosen by the judges.

The producers’ choice for the 29-year-old Hartman was the Beatles classic Hey Jude.

Dave Thompson said that, based on this performance, the audience was in “for a helluva night”.

Gareth Cliff called the performance “fantastic”, while Louw said she always cautions performers that they have to be able to claim a song as their own. That song said ‘make it better’ and you did,” she said.

Randall Abrahams said he is looking forward to seeing Jason perform “more contemporary stuff”.

Jason’s performance of Kiss from a Rose — his own choice — left the judges equally in awe.

Thompson said that 10 or 12 weeks ago, Jason would never have climbed out of his comfort zone like this.

Cliff said Jason was very impressive.

The judges’ choice for Jason was a radical departure for him: Summer Love, by Justin Timberlake.

Louw said Jason made her forget she was supposed to judge because she enjoyed his performances so much. Cliff said he chose that song because Jason is so good he needed to be challenged.

Thompson said dryly that he would have loved to see Jason perform the number with his Dad’s band in a pub somewhere, while Abrahams dubbed him “J-Hart — like K-Fed!”

When Jason spoke to The Witness before the show he said he has worried about being voted out at this stage of the competition.

“Over the previous weeks, a lot of the stronger contestants fell out because people assumed they would make it,” he said. “We have no say. It is completely up to the public to decide.”
