Idols: Season eight winner Khaya Mthethwa to select choir for new music reality show

2012-11-19 00:00

IDOLS SA season eight winner Khaya Mthethwa will be selecting a choir from KwaZulu-Natal to take on singing ensembles from six other South African regions in Mzansi Magic’s new music reality show, Clash of the Choirs South Africa.

Mthethwa has agreed to be the show’s choirmaster for KZN and is encouraging the region’s best singers to head down to the auditions at The Square Boutique Hotel, 250 Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Umhlanga from 8 am to 6 pm on November 24 and 25.

The auditions are open to both individual singers and existing choirs, but because the choirmasters want to create their own choir, no complete choir will make it through. Some members may, however, be chosen for the 20-member competition choir.

Clash of the Choirs South Africa will challenge the contestants to perform different genres of music — from pop and RnB, to gospel and soul — in a choral formation.

“Having started his journey in a choir, Khaya himself will not only inspire many, but is proof that if talent is nurtured, one is another step closer to their reality,” says Yolisa Phahle, channel director: local interest channels. “Mentoring played an important part in this year’s Idols, which attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers to Mzansi Magic and Clash of the Choirs SA is an exciting continuation of our drive to unlock talent.”

If Mthethwa’s choir manages to follow in his winning footsteps, they will walk off with a grand prize worth R500 000 — R250 000 will go to the choir itself, with the remainder going to a charity of their choice.

Already in the finals are Zwai Bala’s choir from Mpumalanga and Zakes Bantwini’s choir from Gauteng.

• Singers interested in taking part in the auditions can download audition forms and pre-register at to speed up the process on the day of auditions, or just rock up at the venue. Take your ID along to prove that you’re 18 years or older.
