‘Idols’ back for seventh season

2011-06-04 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s favourite talent search is back on M-Net for a seventh season. SA Idols begins tomorrow at 5.30 pm, with the first auditions of the season in Cape Town.

This time around there’s a whole new look and a whole new energy, courtesy of new judge Unathi Msengana.

Says Metro FM DJ Unathi, who has two Sama nominations as a singer, “I can totally relate to what the contestants are going to go through.”

This season is also special because it is exactly 10 years ago since Heinz Winkler became South Africa’s first Idol, which means many of this season’s contestants literally grew up watching Idols.

Season seven will also feature some heavy-hitting South African artists as celebrity guest judges in the fourth chair on the judging panel.

First up at the Cape Town auditions is multi-Sama Award winning artist Danny K, who has performed all over the world and knows first-hand the pressures the contestants will have to face.

“I’m very jealous of these singers that get the opportunity to fast-track a whole career, but it is a lot of pressure,” he noted at the start of auditions.

“So I’m going to try not to be the intimidating judge — I’m going to be the friendly judge.”
