Il Quinto - vocal group's new album receiving good reviews

2011-04-07 00:00

Il Quinto - a five-piece male vocal group - is best described as part classical, part pop. Consisting of David Phoshane (bass), Neal Prins (tenor), Ferdinand Gernandt (tenor), Dick Moholane (tenor) and Dihan Slabbert (tenor), all the members except Prins hail from Gauteng, South Africa.

The group formed through Showtime Records, a company which auditioned male singers during October/November in 2009 to form the group.

"All of the members have been involved with music since school," says the band's publicist Carien Marais. Phoshane and Moholane learnt classical music by ear from CDs by international opera singers, such as Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Dihan Slabbert is best known as one of the lead vocalists in the South African pop group, Hi-5, while Neal Prinswas was part of pop/rock band The Alchemy, and Gernandt joined the theatrical production of "African Footprint" for three years (704 performances).

The group's debut album, “Facing a Miracle”, consists of high-tone opera and classical-pop crossover with African rhythms. The title track and single is performed with American superstar Taylor Dayne, and the song reached the Top 10 in seven European countries by the end of 2010.

"One of the challenges is probably introducing the group to South African audiences," says Marais. "The group has been very successful overseas so far and we hope that South Africans will also appreciate and love their music the same."

So far though, the group says that the response in South Africa has been "tremendously positive", and that most people comment on the "uniqueness of the group and the sound, the quality of the original songs and the excellent production".

The group performs on a continuous basis around the country, and has been invited to perform at the Kansai Music Conference being held in Osaka, Japan during September 2011. They will also perform in various other cities in Japan during their visit.

The album is available at leading music stores and is also available on iTunes, Amazon MP3 and other digital download sites.
