‘Illegal connections are removed, but community is often violent’

“Despite asking the municipality to help remove the illegal cables we never get any joy,” she said.

Mkhize, a well-known political activist, said perhaps the municipality will take them seriously once they start protesting and march against council.

“We are paying exorbitant electricity bills to make up for stolen electricity. The municipality should just go to the Jika Joe informal settlement and arrest everyone who has electricity that is illegally connected. This should sort out the problem once and for all,” she said.

Acting Msunduzi spokesperson Nqobile Mtolo said illegal connections were removed in areas where they have been identified and also reported by residents, so it is not accurate to say that council was turning a blind eye on the matter.

“Illegal connections are removed on a regular basis by our electricity department accompanied by council’s security. In other instances such removals turn violent, with members of the communities assaulting the staff and not letting us do our jobs,” said Mtolo.

She said it should be highlighted that “we often come across resistance and intimidation when conducting these operations and, as a result, have to call in the services of the SAPS”.

She said last week illegal connections were removed from Nhlalakahle in Northdale and from Manor.

Provincial police spokersperson Colonel Jay Naicker said an inquest docket is being investigated by Pietermaritzburg SAPS after the body of an unidentified man was found yesterday morning.
