Illegal dumping by council tractor

2008-12-22 00:00

Misuse of the Msunduzi Municipality vehicles has emerged again and this time a tractor with an NPC number plate was spotted on a recent Sunday in Boughton illegally dumping refuse.

A resident caught the tractor with registration plates NPC 703 on camera as it was dumping a load of garden refuse in a fire break in the plantations above Linwood Drive.

The resident, who alerted The Witness about the incident, said the driver of the tractor acted as if he did not know what he was doing when confronted.

“By the time I returned home to get my car to follow him, he had disappeared with the tractor.

“He had left a trail of small branches, which went into Waverleydale Road.

“This is the second time I have seen this sort of activity. Other residents have seen it as well,” said the resident.

Questions surfaced from residents about what the tractor was doing being operated on a Sunday. They questioned whether the tractor was used for council business or if it was being utilised for private purposes.

When these questions where put to the municipality, council spokeswoman Ntobeko Ngcobo said that an investigation will be conducted.

She said that if the driver is found guilty, appropriate action will be taken against him.

Ngcobo thanked members of the public for being council watchdogs.

“We assure the public that such actions will not be tolerated. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused to the residents,” Ngcobo said.
