Illegal exports: Game capture company fined

2012-08-04 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL game capture company Zululand Game Capturers CC, represented by Wilfred Robins, has paid fines totalling R40 000 for illegally exporting protected game to other provinces.

The charges arose from the illegal exporting of 138 nyala from KZN to other provinces, mainly Limpopo, without permits. The offences occurred between July 2008 and February 2009. Admission of guilt fines totalling R40 000 were set, which the accused elected to pay on July 31.

The KZN Wildlife Crime Working Group said excellent co-operation between the police and nature conservation officials in a number of provinces had led to a single incident being properly investigated and a “much bigger crime being uncovered”.

Said Rod Potter of the KZN Wildlife Crime Working Group: “Close co-operation between enthusiastic and well-trained officials is the only way in which criminals moving between provinces can be brought to book. A few individual game capture operators tarnish the professional image of the greater number of law-abiding operators by regularly flaunting the requirements of the legislation regarding the permitted movement of game within the province and the country.

“Notwithstanding that the accused in this case elected to pay an admission of guilt fine, I believe that this was a wake-up call to him and like-minded operators.”
