Illustrated schools’ rugby book published in SA

2008-08-18 00:00

A massive, well-illustrated book dedicated to schools’ rugby in South Africa has recently been published.

FNB have added to their sponsorship of schools’ rugby by backing a pen-picture look at 101 high schools in the country. Titled Derby Day, the book is a road trip through South Africa, covering schools in all provinces and a picture record of 22 FNB Classic Clashes.

Contributing authors Paul Dobson, Tom Hamilton and Matthew Knight give a short history of rugby in general as well as South African rugby, which includes the involvement of schools.

Contributing editors Bryce Hepburn, Ruan Kemp and Justin Nurse have put together over 400 pages of action photos, old boy anecdotes, rugby traditions and player insights into the schools included, particularly the top rugby-playing schools of the country.

The history, the rugby coaches and famous players that went to the schools are covered. Details such as which school never plays with a number 13 jersey, which does a haka before each game and which pioneered the present scrum formation (3, 4, 1) and many more interesting facts are provided.

If you are an old boy of one of these schools, or just a rugby lover, then this book will give you much enjoyment.

The KwaZulu-Natal schools involved are DHS, Glenwood, Hilton, Kearsney, Maritzburg College, Michaelhouse, Northwood, St Charles and Westville.
