‘I’m crazy about democracy’, MP shouts as she grabs free food and runs

CAPE TOWN — Committee meetings in Parliament are getting so hot that at least one MP needs bags full of cold drinks to make it through the day.

Yesterday morning ANC MP and joint defence committee member Pamela Daniels raised her hands in the air and shrieked loudly: “I’m crazy about democracy!” after a meeting of the committee was terminated in a controversial manner.

The meeting was adjourned after committee members were told that the regular programme would no longer be followed.

Daniels then took out a plastic shopping bag and started helping herself to the cold drinks provided for the committee.

She continued shouting: “Democracy by the people for the people” as she filled the plastic bag with Appletiser and Grapetiser drinks.

The drinks, and bottled water, are provided by Parliament for every committee meeting.

Yesterday provision was made for about 50 people who had been expected at the meeting.

Daniels then piled a parliamentary plate high with sandwiches, wrapped it in plastic that she had brought and said, “Now lunch is sorted.”

Then she walked to the lift.

However, the bag was so heavy that she had to ask a colleague to carry it for her.

Daniels was asked last night whether she thought her conduct was fitting for a member of Parliament.

“If the committee meeting is over and the stuff is lying there, why should I leave it?

“It’s been paid for, so then I should be able to take it,” said Daniels as she put down the phone.
