‘I’m not a nerd or a geek’

JACQUELINE Magdalena Webb (17) wept tears of joy when she went on stage to collect her voucher and laptop prize as the KwaZulu-Natal top matric achiever.

The function was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Conference Centre in Durban.

The modest Vryheid High School girl said, “Being number one in my district was enough, but I was not expecting to actually become the top achiever in the province because I am not a nerd or a geek, I am just a normal girl who likes to play hockey, swim and hang with friends.”

When journalists flocked to ask her questions after receiving the news she shyly said, “I am speechless”.

Speaking to The Witness later, Jacqueline said, “It is a huge honour for me to achieve such a milestone and I think this can inspire others to do well in their matric exams.”

She said she likes playing the piano to relax after a strenuous day at school.

“Besides my mother’s support, support from Leon (her stepfather) as well as my brothers, I was also motivated by teachers who encouraged us to do well. They did a lot of work to help me achieve what I have achieved.”

The former head girl of Vryheid High said 2011 grade 12 pupils must respect their teachers and work with the them because they cannot achieve anything if they work by themselves.

She said she attribute her achievements to God, family, friends, teachers and everyone who has touched her life.

“Even though I have done well in my exams, getting 100% in maths and distinctions in all my subjects, I have not yet been approached by anyone for bursaries or anything like that,” she said.

Webb will be studying medicine in Pretoria.
