Imbali residents rally behind do-it-yourself pothole repairs

2013-04-30 00:00

JUST do it yourself! That was the motto Imbali residents adopted this weekend when they rolled up their sleeves and fixed a disintegrating road in their neighbourhood.

The community in Unit 15 dug into their pockets and bought material to close several dangerous potholes and trenches left exposed by the municipality.

Residents said they had been reporting the issue to the municipality since 2010, without any response.

“It’s been years … the municipality put the pipes in and they should have replaced the tar.

“But this ended up not being resolved and that is why we decided to take action,” said resident Dumisani Mncube.

He added that the repairs they carried out addressed only the tip of the iceberg — there are many more potholes in the same area.

“We decided to close those on the main road for now,” said Mncube.

Besides applying elbow grease, the community had to cough up for the material. They bought cement, sand and gravel to fill the holes.

“It was for everyone to donate. We used more than 10 pockets of cement,” said Mncube.

Fellow resident Lindani Gumede said: “We are protecting our cars and children from danger as cars have to swerve off the road while people are walking next to the road.”

In all, six potholes and seven trenches were filled.

Msunduzi Municipality failed to respond to queries from The Witness.
