Impi resist TUT onslaught

2013-03-05 00:00

THE FNB University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Impi managed to hold off a late onslaught from FNB Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) to win 10-9 in a nail-biter in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

A fairly dull first half only produced a penalty goal from TUT flyhalf Morné Hugo, which meant that his side had the edge at the break 2-0.

The second half started brightly for the home side as they scored within two minutes of the restart as wing Mondli Ntshingila went over for a try.

The momentum continued as the Impi’s other wing Hendrick Lategan also went over for a try. These two were not converted which meant UKZN had a 10-2 lead within the first 10 minutes of the second-half.

TUT continued to press for a try of their own, but could only manage to get a penalty kick through flyhalf Hugo to make the score 10-4 heading into the last strategy break.

Going into the last 20 minutes of the game, TUT were putting the pressure on the home team, but their momentum was halted after lock Werner Lourens was given a yellow card for repeated infringements at the break-down.

UKZN were unable to convert the extra player and went the whole 10 minutes without scoring a point, which the Vikings would have used to motivate them.

In the 73rd minute TUT did manage to get their try when centre Oswald Gibson went over for their first try.

The pressure was then entirely on the Impi who managed to hold out for the last couple of minutes and score a morale-boosting win.
