Impi to hire player mentors

2013-10-24 00:00

THE University of KZN Rugby Club is not letting the lush grass on the rugby stadium pitches on the Durban and Pietermaritzburg campuses grow under the feet as they prepare for the new season of their flagship team, the UKZN Impi, whose 2014 Varsity Shield campaign kicks off on January 27.

Word has gone out that the new Impi head coach, former All Blacks head coach John Mitchell, is looking to add an arsenal of player mentors for the impending season and the added bonus is that the successful applicants will be able to learn from a master of his profession in a dynamic high-performance environment.

The requirements are exacting for the five-month contracts (November 2013 to March 2014) with the coaches needing an International Rugby Board (IRB) level two coaching certificate, Bok Smart accreditation and three years’ coaching experience at Premier League club level.

There are no fewer than seven coaching, medical and managerial positions in the offing, from forwards coach (focus on building pressure on the opposition); lineouts and re-starts coach; backline coach; skills coach and analyst (focus on opposition threats, weekly analysis and specific skills cultivation); defensive coach (alignment, spacing and effectiveness of tackle and assist); a registered team biokineticist (player rehab); to a team manager (for the Varsity Shield and Premier League campaigns).

The closing date is Friday and more information can be obtained from Reggie Smith at or 033 260 5936.
