Impi upbeat about Wits encounter

2011-02-05 00:00

DESPITE their debut 33-6 defeat away to University of Western Cape this week, the UKZN Impi are upbeat ahead of Monday’s 6.45 pm Varsity Shield match against Wits University at the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road.

A large crowd is expected on the Pietermaritzburg campus and beer tents plus local band Good Luck should complement the entertainment provided by the rugby players.

Prior to the UWC defeat, head coach Beans Bateman’s Impi had embarked on a tour to Pretoria, where they played two matches against Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), losing the first 37-29 but winning the second 26-19.

Following the tour, they had a full match practice against the Sharks XV at the professional franchise’s King’s Park headquarters.

Meanwhile, the Natal University Maritzburg Alumni, the Numzans, put together a squad for the Cape Town 10s that resembled a veritable Who’s Who of recent Varsity rugby who are sure to make the trip to the Peter Booysen on Monday to support their beloved Impi against Wits.

Numzans: Pete Badham, Mike Parkinson, Frank Goedeke, Dave Champion, Mark Fredricks, Grant Langley, Dom Moerdyk, Andy Dahl, Mark Schulze, Gerry Goedeke, Craig McIntosh (capt), Kevin Elliot, Udo Goedeke, Colin van Heerden, Big Moon Lister, Stu Porrill, Guy Armstrong, Giles Calenborne, Sean Temple, Leon Venter, Phil Bradford, Hilton Nagel, Rob Knott, Ryno Combrinck.
