‘Imposed’ candidate angers Ward 29

2011-04-11 00:00

DESPITE claims by the ANC that the issue of “imposed” candidates for ward councillors has been resolved, Ward 29 residents in Copesville are up in arms over the candidacy of Thandi Ndlovu, who they claim was nominated by the ANC and not by the community.

A meeting to officially announce the candidate was cancelled yesterday when the situation became volatile.

One group chanted slogans in favour of the candidate while another booed her, with individuals saying they will vote for an independent candidate, Penelope Ndlovu.

Community member Thuthukani Ngcemu said the community had pushed for an independent candidate after they felt a councillor had been imposed on them by the ANC.

“The provincial listing committee, which decides who’s to be nominated, decided to nominate Thandi, who is also the ANC’s ward secretary, without consulting the masses. People don’t want her and that might have a negative impact on the party,” said Ngcemu.

ANC spokesperson Makhosi Khoza said the ANC has never said it has solved the candidacy issue.

“We never said we have solved all the candidate matters. We understand that there might be some unhappiness among members, but it’s too late to re-open the process with the Independent Electoral Commission, so we urge people to vote for those candidates.

“After the election there will be a post-election summit where we will look at how to avoid the repetition of this situation.”

ANC national organiser and head of campaigns Fikile Mbalula said in Brits yesterday that the ANC will investigate allegations of manipulation of candidate lists after the elections, the SABC reported.
