Impounded: Four buses for permit offence

2010-01-04 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate impounded four buses and arrested four drivers yesterday for transporting passengers on a tourist permit.

Two of the buses belonged to Dube Tours, one to Impala tours and one was a Star bus, all Johannesburg-based companies.

Colin Govender, a spokesman for the RTI, said the drivers were arrested because picking up passengers on a tourist permit is in violation of the regulations they have to adhere to when they apply for the tourist permit.”

The tourist permit operations are totally different from the route permits.”

He said that the route permits specify which routes the drivers can use and how many passengers they can load.

He also said there was a cost factor involved as the pricing for the two permits is vastly different.

“Buses cannot do both; they are either a tourist bus or a passenger bus.”

Govender said the arrested drivers will appear in court today.
