Impressive times in last two Comrades qualifiers in KZN

2011-05-03 00:00

THE local track-and-field season draws to a close now with the top athletes heading for the European circuit where some will continue to fight for qualification times and places on the team to South Korea for the World Championships.

With over R100 000 in prize money, it was a foregone conclusion that the province’s top athletes would head to Biggarsberg, despite the very late acceptance of the Umzinyathi 52 km Ultra race by KZN Athletics.

Mr Price club made a clean sweep of the men’s podium, led by Prodigal Khumalo who may well have sacrificed his chance of a gold medal at Comrades with this late burst of effort only four weeks before the 89 km challenge.

Khumalo was joined by Professor Mallen and Herbert Chukera for most of the race and finished within eight seconds of each other to dominate the prize money. Khumalo’s time was given as three hours, six minutes and 28 seconds, which would seem rather impressive for the distance given the nature of the course.

Winnie Mnisi earned the top spot for the ladies with her 4:11:37, less than 200 metres ahead of Nedbank’s Fikile Mbuthuma, with Iris Ndlovu a distant third for the Boxer club.

Provincial cross-country and middle distance star Siyabonga Nkonde led the clean sweep of the 10 km by the Madadeni club in a useful 30 minutes and 53 seconds, well clear of Bonginkosi Zwane who had the edge of the battle with Sphumundla Nvembe. Nvembe finished third in 32:08.

Bernard Danganzi was the hero of the Checkout Verulam marathon held on Sunday. The Bluff Meats Formula One runner was the only person to break the two-hour 30-minute barrier with Mr Price’s Richard Nene five minutes off the pace in second, having already accounted for his clubmate Khulekani Ngubane who finished third.

Another Bluff Meats athlete, Joseph Mandizha, finished fourth and then first in the 35-39 category.

It is no coincidence that the Bluff Meat Formula One club are being seen at the front of the local races in this final build-up to Comrades. Do not be surprised to see a patrol of the red-vested runners at the front of Comrades confusing the early pacemakers and looking to secure some of the hot spots in the 89 km race.

Natal Carbineers’ Nonsikelelo Mbambo had a tight call against Nicola McMurray in the ladies’ race with Mbambo having only 200 metres in hand at the line which she crossed in 3:29:38.

Sibongile Mpanza was third and then first in 35-39 in 3:40:34

These were the final two Comrades qualifiers in the province and runners are reminded that they are required to get their qualifying or seeding times into the CMA office before Friday. At present there are 19 617 entries for Comrades 2011, but those who do not submit the necessary qualification information will be dropped from the field this coming weekend.
