In love with the City of Choice

2015-01-08 00:00

THE well travelled, former Moroka Swallows and recently retired Maritzburg United defender, Peter Pietersen is staying put in Pietermaritzburg.

The Ocean View (Cape Town) born Pietersen was forced to retire after playing for a couple of seasons for the local PSL side, Maritzburg United, due to niggling injuries.

Instead of packing his bags and heading back to Cape Town, Pietersen decided to stay in order to plough back into the City of Choice community.

“When I joined Maritzburg United a while ago, I instantly fell in love with Pietermaritzburg. The fact is that there are a lot of youngsters who are looking for opportunities to play and there is a lot of talent.

“I know the majority of former PSL players are going to big cities such as Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, but I personally believe the City of Choice is also big and needs to be taken seriously and stay on the South African map.

“There are thousands of youngsters around the KwaZulu-Natal midlands area who are neglected or somehow overlooked and yet can go far if given a chance,” he said.

Pietersen has started his football development academy at Maritzburg Christian School sports grounds.

He caters for different age groups. During his hey day, Pietersen played for Hellenic, Moroka Swallows, FC AK and recently, Maritzburg United.

He made his professional debut in the 1998/99 season. He also represented South Africa at senior level (Bafana Bafana), U23 and U20.

“I don’t pick and choose, I give everybody a chance and from anywhere. A few weeks ago we had a lot of youngsters from Mpumalanga (Hammarsdale), Howick and Pinetown attending our coaching clinics.”
