In trouble: municipal take-over

2009-10-28 00:00

UMHLABUYALINGANA local municipality, north of the province, face being taken over and run by the KZN MEC for Local Government or amalgamated with Umkhanyakude District due to its failures in managing its finances.

The provincial finance committee and KZN standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) members were told by Treasury Department representatives yesterday that the local council is failing to honour legislation to furnish Treasury with financial records.

They said that the council’s municipal manager Reverend S.E Mangele, hardly sets foot in the council as he works from home. According to the Treasury representatives the municipality has not paid its 80 staff its October salaries.
