Independent candidates call for police protection

2011-05-13 00:00

GROWING threats of violence has prompted independent candidates in the Umgungundlovu District to call on National Police Commissioner, Bheki Cele, to deploy police from oustide areas to the district in the run up to next week’s elections.

The independents candidates — many from the ranks of the ANC who decided to stand as candidates because of unhappiness over the list process — met yesterday to discuss threats to their campaigns.

Sandile Ngcobo, an independent candidate from Ward 21 in Dambuza, said their election campaigns have been marred by smear campaigns, intimidation, shooting, stoning and beating of our supporters.

He said incidents have been reported to the Independent Electoral Commission, Independent Complaints Directorate and the SAPF.

According to Ngcobo the situation is showing signs of getting worse and they are worried about what is going to happen in these final days before the election. He added that even their meeting yesterday had to be held at the Newholmes Hotel in the northern suburbs. “This was the only safe place for us because the ANC has created no-go areas in the wards we represent,” he added.

He said many of them became independent candidates because they were fed up with the Party’s Regional Executive Committee (REC) hand-picking their own candidates who would represent their own interests in the council

“The ANC is misleading the rate payers and voting public by saying that they have turned a corner and the difficult time that we faced are now behind us. A year ago when the EXCO was removed, and the provincial government made an intervention the debt of the city was sitting at R630million,” he said.
